This is the diary of Varyd Kohl, anthropologist and naturalist from the city of Garuga, visiting the Arrakesh Forest to study the Arrakeshi people. Here I will make notes on their habits and customs in a bid to learn how they live and build a better understanding between them and the people of Carlika.

It tells the tale of Jakanash, Treespeaker of the Fifth Tribe of Arrakesh who, within weeks of having terrible visions, loses his wife, his home and the respect of his people at the hands of a stranger from Carlika. To save his people, he must undertake a journey that has every chance of killing him. All he has left is his faith in Arrakesh, the spirit of the forest. But will it be enough to take him across a strange land to find a man he knew twenty years before?

In his diary, Varyd Kohl, the friend Jakan seeks, told of that visit all those years ago. In it, the reader is introduced to the special world of the Arrakeshi people and many of the people whom Jakan now hopes to save.
